Shari Morgan is the PMI Champion for the Community!
In February, PMI announced that CMG MI’s own Shari Morgan was the 2009 PMI Champion for the Community.
This award recognizes a PMIer who has volunteered outstanding community service that goes above and beyond ordinary activities while demonstrating a strong personal commitment to building a strong community. The nomination process began in November 2009, with managers at PMI and CMG MI urged to submit nominations for deserving candidates.
Helping Young Women at Risk “Take Wings”
At both companies, MI Operations Representative Shari Morgan (left) is well-known for her years of dedicated outreach to the less fortunate and needy. In nominating her for the award, her supervisor Sandy Wong focused in particular on her work with the Take Wings Foundation in Oakland, California. “Shari deserves this award,” Sandy said. “She is always focused on ways to help others and has a very personal connection with her community. Her service with Take Wings is a perfect example.”
The organization provides opportunities for young women at risk from inner-city neighborhoods to interact with positive role models, receive academic scholarships and awards, and participate in community service projects.
Shari initially joined Take Wings as a volunteer, starting in 2002. Since 2004, she has served on the Foundation’s Board of Directors, where her responsibilities include recruiting, training, supporting and organizing all of the volunteers for every Take Wings Foundation event.
"So Much Passion for Service"
According to Tracy Ward, Executive Director of Take Wings, who has worked with Shari for seven years, "Shari always displays a high degree of integrity, responsibility and commitment. I have always been impressed with her ability to connect with the youth as well as the volunteers for the foundation. She shows a true dedication to the values of volunteer service and in particular has a gift to empower young people to realize their own potential.
"She brings with her so much passion for service, the youth that we serve and the community at large. Shari truly understands and accepts the personal responsibility that we all have to give back to the community."
Shari’s work with Take Wings was formally honored as the 2009 PMI Champion for the Community at the all-company meeting at PMI on February 17, 2010. PMIers stood to applaud as President Steve Smith presented her with the award and paid tribute to her long record of volunteer work.
“I am deeply honored to be the recipient of this award,” Shari said. "Every member of the Take Wings Foundation board deserves it, and I see myself as representing them in accepting it. Many young people only realize that they have a stake in the community when others show they care about them, work with them, and help them realize their potential. Strengthening the community is the responsibility of us all."
